Tips for success at the Public Market

(from various sources, including the New Farmers' Market, by V. Corum 2001)

>> Offer unique items that supermarkets, Wal-Mart and malls just can't offer, (like unusual peppers or heirloom tomatoes).

>> Don't just decrease prices, rather, increase quality and marketability of your goods. Make your products attractive. Customers seek quality first, then price. Highlight what separates you from the rest.

>> Value-added: This means doing some additional processing that increases the products raw worth to the customer. One vendor said, "Garlic sells for $1 a bunch, but sell it with dried herb flowers and 2 cayenne peppers and it sells for $10!"

>> Eye-catching: you have only about three seconds to catch the customer's eye!

>> Go vertical: stacking your goods may be better than a "U" shape. Use tiers, steps, or shelves. Waterfall effect with produce--make customers feel they are reveling in "abudanza" (Italian for abundance).

>> The BUY ZONE: Knees to top of the head is the customer's main visual field.

>> Wood is good for display--customers respond to natural materials.

>> The public market is theater! Go wild on "set" design: your display! The natural interaction with customers is the "script:. Remember YOU are the star--act and look the part. Consider a cool apron, farmer's hat, or even a costume, whatever accentuates for you type of business. Wear a name-tag. Engage the customer, educate and inform about your craft. They love this, and cannot get it at Wal-Mart!

>> Appeal to as many senses as possible. Think color, music, fragrance, taste..the feel of an apricot!

>> Use tablecloths or coverings to add a bit more sophistication to your display.

>> Display in full containers. Rearrange when containers appear scant.

>> Signage: A business without a sign -- is a sign of "NO BUSINESS". Put effort and thought into the best storefront signage possible.

>> Clearly mark prices, special, other features. Customers generaolly want to know: 1) what is it? (features) 2) what is it good for? (benefits) and 3) How much does it cost?

>> Treat every customer as if they are the most important person on earth.

>> Keep customers coming back! Ask what they want next time.

>> Create your end-product right in the market! Spin pottery, weave, arrange flowers, paint...Make the production part of the show and the fun!
