In ancient Ireland, a Teague was a traveling poet/entertainer who spread news and information from town to town. It was also their job to keep spirits high among the townspeople in the often tumultuous times of the old country. For the past five years, Teague Alexy has been touring the Midwest bearing news, stories, philosophies, parables and a groove that has traces of everything from funk, old country-blues, reggae, hip-hop, soul, roots-rock and jazz without overstating anything but an original head-bobbing sound.

His conscious and memorable lyrics are (as Minnesota Music Award winning engineer Kevin Grapski put it) ‘challenging to the mind and warming to the heart’. Teague’s witty and often humorous wordplay is filled with calls to dream and live as mankind was intended, respectful and free from all shackles and chains of the mind and spirit. A solo acoustic show can include moments where Teague will put down his Harmonicas and 1957 Harmony Acoustic Guitar to act out a short story, recite a spoken-word poem or sing acapella while his feet and hands play out a beat. The reason people come however is the songs. Teague’s writing has frankly reached a level of maturity and wit few songwriters ever develop.

Adam Tanner

American traditional - American root music.

concessions by Sibby's OZ Ice Cream Cafe

Born in NY state and raised in Northern California, Adam was introduced to music via Suzuki Violin training at the age of nine. Adam's older brother Evan, also, had a keen interest in music and played the guitar, eventually teaching Adam enough rudiments on that instrument to keep his interest growing.

Adam's high school years were a pivotal time in his musical development, when he was exposed to Bluegrass Music and took up the mandolin. As a young adult he spent most of his spare time seeking out recordings and attending concerts and jam sessions; expanding his knowledge and vocabulary of

southern Appalachian vocal harmonies, and continuing to improve his guitar, fiddle and mandolin skills.

By the time Adam reached the age of 21, he had begun to branch out beyond traditional music and found a new way of expressing himself: by playing electric guitar and composing original Rock and Roll based music. In 1983, Adam relocated to Southern California and helped to form what was to become a seminal electronic/rock fusion band, Grotus. The band played up and down the west coast, building a fan base and eventually putting out two records on the "Alternative Tentacles" label owned by famed Dead Kennedys front man and political activist Jello Biafra. In the early 1990s, Grotus landed a recording contract with London/Polygram records (USA). Adam and the band continued to tour, sharing the stage with the likes of Nine inch Nails, Swiss industrial rockers The Young Gods, New Jersey rockers Monster Magnet, and influencing and touring with Korn. The mainstream music business was a hard road and after eight years of touring the US and Europe, Grotus disbanded.
In the years to follow the break up of the band, Adam refocused his energy on acoustic American roots music and dove head first into studying and playing pre-Bluegrass southern Appalachian string music.

In 2000, Adam relocated to Western North Carolina, to be closer to the geographical origin of his revitalized musical passions. During his early years in Western NC, Adam sought out older masters of the appalachian traditions.

Visits with older musicians such as Joe Thompson, Charlie Acuff, and Clyde Davenport provided a chance to learn the music from it's source, a much more rewarding experience than just learning from recordings.

In 2003, Adam joined the Crooked Jades, a California based progressive acoustic band with roots in pre-war southern styles. During the next three years, the band, with Adam on fiddle, mandolin and acoustic lap guitar, released a cd entitled "Worlds on Fire," and toured folk festivals and clubs throughout the US, UK and Germany. Throughout this time Adam discovered and began to explore connections between pre-war African-American music and early anglo string band music. This research resulted in the development of a unique repertoire that crosses racial barriers. Adam cultivated his instrumental and vocal skills to present a personal and fresh interpretation of this music to a modern audience.

As of December 2006, Adam parted ways with the Crooked Jades to embark on a solo career focusing on early country blues vocal and instrumental styles. He recently completed work on a new cd entitled "Sure as You're Born".

In June 2007, Adam was called upon to fill in for Kip Beacco with the Hunger Mountain Boys playing a variety of dates in the U.S. and U.K.. He currently sings, fiddles, plays mandolin and guitar as a fourth member of the band. Adam is currently available for recording and performance work and prefers to make music in an American traditional music or American roots influenced original music setting.

Right from jump street, the electrifying sound of Joe Price hits you in all the places you live:  The insistent, driving rhythm chops, the taproot boot-stomps, the splintering, thrilling slide runs up the fret board, and that voice—a keening, haunting miracle seemingly channeled from the ghosts of past masters—all add up to a one-man blues tornado who can pack, command and wring-out a dance-floor with the authority of an eight-piece showband.

And while Price inhabits classic blues standards as if they were favorite shirts, his own deep and varied bag of original music is so formidable—so thoroughly imbued with life’s mysteries—that noted Grammy-award nominated singer/songwriter Greg Brown has long referred to Joe as “the Buddha.”

Clearly, this man was born to play the blues.

Growing up in a remote rural setting easily could turn out to be a severe disadvantage to a fledgling musician. But for Vicki (Ewing) Price, the particular mix-and-match, peek-a-boo forays into country, blues and R&B-influenced gospel afforded by her formative years in Waukon, Iowa circumscribed a crucible that would forge a distinctive, blues-belting guitarist who is as earthy, unique and seductive as a greenhouse orchid.

Of course, the intersection/collision of Vicki’s life with that of incendiary, mercurial Iowa Blues Hall of Fame legend Joe Price more than 25 years ago accelerated the process, but—make no mistake here—the creative, musical impact of this most-fortuitous of romantic pairings was and remains a bustling two-way street in nearly every way imaginable, and the artistic achievements of both partners are irrevocably intertwined.

The on-stage interplay between Joe and Vick (which is as natural and copacetic as it is off-stage) makes that connection clear, and the mutual admiration society is well-tended.

Jack's WEBSITE

South Carolinian Jack Williams, guitarist/singer/songwriter/storyteller, is outstanding among a handful of artists who - in skill, depth and integrity – stand head and shoulders above the many performers flooding today’s folk circuit.  Among acoustic guitarists he is near-legendary. Having avoided the compromises of the commercial music industry during his 50+-year professional career, he prefers touring “under the radar”, playing concerts, large and small, week in and week out, from the sheer love of music and performing.

Jack is now a sought-after artist on contemporary acoustic - or "folk" - music stages. From his acclaimed appearances at the Newport, Boston, Philadelphia, Kerrville, (New Bedford) SummerFest and other Folk Festivals, his musicianship, songs, stories and commanding presence established him as an uncommonly inspiring and influential performer.

Buddy Mondlock writes songs. He does it so well that some great songwriters have recorded his songs on their own albums. Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith and Janis Ian, to name just a few. But there’s nothing like hearing the guy who wrote ‘em sing ‘em. He’s not going to pin your ears back with those songs. He’s going to draw you into his world. Where a single snowflake follows the trajectory of a relationship, where you get your pocket picked by a Roman cat, where you might swim over the edge of the world if you’re not careful and where dreams that don’t come true still count. And it can all be happening in a little folk club or on a stage by a grassy hill or in someone’s living room or in the Royal Albert Hall.

His new album, “The Edge of the World,” is his most personal recording to date. The song cycle is an introspective journey from childhood through to the disintegration of a marriage and beyond. And while always a wry observer of the social interactions of human beings, the song “Big Fish, Shallow Water” takes on a political edge as well. Buddy did most of the playing and singing himself, with a little help from longtime friend, bassist Mike Lindauer. Then co-producer Jim Tullio added just the right sonic touches of percussion and atmospheric guitar to glue it all together.

Karen Mal has been chosen as a winner or finalist in the following songwriting competitions:

Portland Songwriters Association (2002)
South Florida Folk Festival (2003)

KRCL/Founders Title Folk and Bluegrass Festival (2002)
Kerrville New Folk (2001 and 2002)

Karen Mal sings. From raw sensuality to shimmering bell-like clarity, her voice is both tender and powerful, and as effortless as a waterfall. There's a river that flows between Karen and her audience. It's about love. The possibility and the unbearable beauty of it. Elusive and abundant at the same time.

Based in Austin, TX, Karen has created a name for herself as a captivating singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. Ranging from charming to seductive, impressionistic to philosophical, her songs have brought her nationwide acclaim. She's won top awards from the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival in Texas, the Tucson Folk Festival and the Portland Songwriters Association and has also been a three time New Folk Finalist at Kerrville, emerging artist at Falcon Ridge and a finalist at the Sisters Folk Festival.

Amy Goodman has called him "the musical version of Democracy Now!" He has loads of MP3's available for free download on his website, www.davidrovics.com, along with CDs, links, etc. More importantly, he's really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, and he will make the revolution irresistible.

"David Rovics is the peace poet and troubador of our time."
Cindy Sheehan

"Listen to David Rovics."
Pete Seeger

"David's ability to capture the imagination, fascination and participation of elementary school aged children is obvious from everything he does before his opening song until the last tune leaves his guitar... Children who see him perform more than once shout out song requests when they see him and sing along quickly to their favorite lyrics... While the themes of many of his original songs are silly and carefree he also includes songs that challenge children and their families to think about bigger, global issues... David's shows are full of wit and charm that makes his audience members of all ages glad they came out for the show. I highly recommend hiring David as a singer/songwriter for a one time event or regular schedule of performances."

Bill Isles (b. 11/2/1951, Duluth, MN USA) returned to performing after a twenty-five year hiatus in February of 2000. Since that time, he has become one of the most highly-respected singer/songwriters in the Minnesota acoustic scene and has begun to get national and international attention.

His songs are down-to-earth poetic reflections of life experiences and often explore adventurous metaphorical worlds. These worlds vary greatly in scope and texture such as the differences between the clever honky-tonk ambiguity of "The Hole in Our Town" and the enchanting feel of "Sistine Chapel", both from his 2003 release "The Threshold". Each of his compositions provides a spectrum of interpretation opportunities, as well, as demonstrated by "Sistine Chapel". At first, you might conclude that the song is a first-person account of  Michelangelo’s first visit to scope out the project at the Sistine Chapel, but you start to realize that, perhaps, this is also an artist’s perception of entering the “chapel” of his/her audience. Then, again, it also hints at the intimate interaction of lovers. It is this multi-layering that has drawn fans to listen over and over again, and to describe his live performances as "mesmerizing".

His love of life and command of language has strong roots in his childhood, but his urgency to tell these stories comes from an experience in 1993 when, with just enough warning to drive himself to the hospital, his heart stopped beating. He arrived with just ten minutes to spare. After being defibrillated, and before the doctors had time to detect and open a blocked artery in his heart, he made a commitment to himself that, if he survived, he would begin to write again. Those paddles restarted his heart in more ways than one…

Scott Cook - Long Way to Wander
After six years in Taiwan, tangling with kindergarteners and watching his roots and reggae band The Anglers rise to prominence in the local underground music scene, Edmonton songwriter Scott Cook has returned with a new CD. Fittingly entitled Long Way to Wander, it is a rambling body of work, dotted with road stories, jokes, existential questions, and wry observations. The eleven songs on the disc were written over the course of seven years and cover a wide musical territory, from folk to blues, soul, country and reggae, but a common lyrical thread—wandering, curiosity, freedom, and the uncertainty and rootlessness that go with them—strings the whole album together. And although the stories are all true, and deeply personal, they are told in an honest, compassionate, public voice that invites the listener to walk a while alongside.

"His voice is Tom Waits, his sensibilities are Bob Dylan, Kerouac, and Walt Whitman, and his music is a mixture of folk, rhythm and blues, country, bluegrass and reggae. Being a writer as well as a musician, his songs are rich, atmospheric stories about his geographical and philosophical journeys... His music has the ability to transport one instantly to a space of campfire-lit, creek-dipping radiance. Listening to this album is perennially serendipitous – like one is chancing upon a well-traveled old soul by the fireside, whose stripping-away-the-veneer knowledge of the world is never jaded, but always innocent."   -Monica Chattaway, CKUA radio

Songwriting Workshop  www.fullcircleretreat.com  Phone: 608-675-3828

September 26-28

How do songs get written? There are about as many ways to write them as there are songs. Songs are an

intersection of story and music that has no address, no formula, and no timetable. Writing is equally about play

as it is about work. Writing songs is generative process; songs sometimes have a mind of their own and the best

you can do is hold on, follow your ear, and keep writing.

This workshop is a time to let the playful writer in you put some of your stories to music. Learn a way of writing and

of playing music that spawns melodies and images that have not yet been joined, not yet been sung. The ability to

play an instrument is not required for this workshop (although, if you have one, please bring it along). L.J. writes

songs on the guitar, piano, bass, and the strumstick. All writing experience levels welcome.

Weekend Retreat: Workshop begins Friday evening, continues Saturday 9-4pm, concert Saturday night, continues Sunday 9-1pm--$160

You may attend the Workshop on Saturday only if you prefer: 9am-4pm--$130

Workshop fee includes admission to the Saturday night concert.

As a full-time carpenter and a single parent, L.J. Booth has still managed to leave Wisconsin and
play a smattering of shows...over the past several years. But all of that is about to change.

With his daughter graduating from high school, L.J. has pulled a startling collection of songs
onto his new CD release...THE OX THAT PULLS THE CART. Diverse in style and resonant in it’s
poetic voice, THE OX... is a career defining work. If an ambitious touring schedule and early
reviews are any indication, his small yet faithful fanbase is going to grow quickly.

In 1987, L.J. came out of the woodwork with YARNS. SING OUT described this debut as
“simply, great music”, and added, “I don‚t know how far he has strayed from Wisconsin thus far,
but L.J. Booth is one hell of a Yarnspinner and singer...”.

In the years following, L.J. was indeed traveling---playing clubs (from Passim, to the Cactus Cafe) and festivals (including Falcon Ridge, Edmonton, Kerrville, Telluride, and the Rocky Mtn. Folks Fest)---building a stage presence that has become his trademark. He has entered three songwriting “competitions”... Kerrville‚s New Folk, Telluride‚ Troubadour, and Falcon Ridge‚ Showcase.... and won all three--invited back to a main stage performance the following year.

Quickly, other performers were eager to include his songs in their sets and recordings...including David Wilcox, Anne Hills, Chuck Pyle, Sally Rogers, and Carrie Newcomer.

In 1992, when L.J. released his second C.D. , BIG HOURGLASS, Dirty Linen called Booth “a crack songwriter with a cinematic flair in his lyrics and a keen eye for the small details of everyday life”.

Born in the Philippines, most of L.J.s childhood was split between India and Idaho. With traveling in his blood, L.J. hitchhiked extensively in the States and in Europe after leaving home...working a variety of jobs; oil rigs in Wyoming, a lumber yard in Portland, planting trees in Idaho, playing street music in Germany and Switzerland, maintenance work at Crater Lake.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR said “this gifted singer-songwriter skillfully connects the dots between his
own past, present and future with succinct, often powerful lyrics, appealing melodies, and agile
fingerpicking...his keen fascination with life‚s journey draws listeners closer to the memories and
revelations that make it worth traveling”.

Michael Whisler is young self-taught acoustic fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter. He composes for both 12 and 6 string guitars with dynamic power and speed while drawing from American folk, blues and classical music.

His tunes range from ripping fast paced instrumentals to slower more emotional ballads and even dissonant free time melodies. He also blends a unique bottleneck tone to some of his compositions which utilize alternate tunings.

Although Michael is mainly a solo guitarist he does throw in his low warm vocals to some of the tunes, while all along never noticing there isn’t a band backing him up.
